Starting a lawn care company is one of the easiest and profitable business you could start. In this article you will learn from beginning to end how to start and operate your very own lawn care company.

Mower

Today most people already own a lawn mower so we will assume that you have one. At least a 21″ residential push mower. The first thing you will want to do is get your first client. If you are itching to work you could always bid lower and take on a lawn cheaper than the client is already paying, which is not ideal but works for those that are itching for the first client. Other than that you can walk, drive around your neighborhood or a community nearby, and seek out lawns that are in need of mowing. Knock on the door and let them know you are interested in mowing their lawn at a reasonable rate. And that they could get a discount maybe if it’s ongoing service. Continue doing this until you have a steady monthly income of about $400-$500 a month, or about 5 clients. Buy a better mower. A new mower with a warranty.

Equipment

Figure out what other jobs you would like to do and buy the tools to do those new jobs when you can afford them. Practice on your own property before charging clients for these services. You will have options of learning to do hedges, flowers, irrigation repairs, etc. But to start there are a few basic tools you will need. You will need a mower, string trimmer and a hang blower. To start you can get by with residential equipment and with care they can last for a few months, maybe longer if you’re lucky.

Hiring Help

To begin you may want to hire help for a few hours a week. If you can afford to give up $100 a week from your earnings hire someone for 6-7 hours a week, or one full day a week to help alleviate some of the work. Gradually give your employee more hours when you are able to. You can hire them as a 1099 or W2 employee. 1099 would be the easiest route.

Company

Now that you have 20 lawns, 1 helper, landscaping trailer and a dedicated truck you are there. You have been a company from day one but now you feel like one. You have your tshirts to match and your business cards to pass out. You are the boss!
