HIV or human immunodeficiency virus is a very aggressive disease that unfortunately affects 1.2 million people in the US, and 70 million worldwide. It can be very hard to deal with and especially difficult when dating, to come clean to your partner about. Here are a few ways to make talking about your status a little easier:

Fully come to terms with the situation. Before telling anyone about your status, both your family and your partner, make sure that you have come to terms with the situation at hand. By fully wrapping your head around everything and having a handle on your emotions, you will be able to better handle any reaction that could possibly come your way after letting your loved ones know.

Don’t be ashamed. If you’re living with HIV it’s nothing to be ashamed of. This doesn’t mean the end of the world and you will get through it. When telling your partner, it will require a little confidence and understanding, as you can only let them know and hope for the best. However, no matter what their reaction may be, remember that you’re not alone. There are those that will love you no matter your status, but rather for who you are instead.

Keep an open mind. Keeping an open mind can help you to be completely prepared for any and everything that potentially comes with telling your partner. Being mentally prepared for any kind of reaction, question, or concerns they may have, can help you to be relaxed and help them feel comfortable enough to ask anything. Overall, this helps to shed light on the topic of conversation and more importantly, greatly assists in breaking stigmas that surround HIV.

The sooner, the better. Telling people that you care about sooner than later, is best for everyone. Talking with your partner about the situation sooner rather than putting it off will not only help them, but it will help you as well. Doing so can bring about comfort for you knowing that in the end you aren’t alone and no matter what, you do in fact have support. It will also help your partner to learn more about this disease, thus helping to create a healthy dialogue, honesty, and lots of understanding between you both.
